An obsessed Ashanti fan who bombarded the R&B star's mother with obscene text messages has been jailed for two years.

Devar Hurd was convicted of stalking and aggravated harassment in December, and, on Thursday, a Manhattan judge sentenced the wannabe rapper to two years imprisonment. Hurd has already served eight months behind bars awaiting his trial and subsequent sentencing.

The 31 year old was arrested last year after texting a string of lewd messages to the Grammy winner's mother, Tina Douglas - including sexual and romantic scenarios and explicit images of his genitalia.

Hurd defended his actions, insisting the messages were harmless "banter".

A fan who unleashed his crude fantasies about Ashanti in a battery of text messages and photos to the R&B singer’s mother has been sentenced to two years in jail.

Devar Hurd was sentenced Thursday in a Manhattan court. He was convicted in December of stalking and other charges. The 31-year-old has already served about eight months while awaiting trial and sentencing.

The Grammy Award-winning singer’s mother, Tina Douglas, said she was alarmed and disgusted by the messages. They included photos of Hurd’s genitals and of the Douglas family’s Long Island home.

Hurd said the messages were intended as friendly banter and jokes.

There is no confirmation on if this rumor is true, but it sure is exciting. Ashanti linking up with Dr. Dre could mean great things for the singer. Dr. Dre has an amazing ear when it comes to production and he could be the push that Ashanti's career needs. Who knows, maybe Ashanti can collaborate on a song with rapper Eminem.

Ashanti is the goddaughter of the mayor's wife, Nynell. She became famous in the early 2000s as a singer, songwriter, actress and model. Her hit songs include "Foolish" and "What's Luv?" R&B star Ashanti has teamed up with the producers of "Ugly Betty" and "The Office" to create a new reality TV contest.

The singer/actress has just signed a deal with the brains behind Reveille Productions to produce and host her own version of "American Idol". Details of the show are being kept tightly under wraps, but Ashanti's manager mother Tina Douglas tells WENN, "It's an unscripted television show that is definitely music related.

We'll be revealing more in the coming weeks. She has her own record label, called Written Entertainment, and the show is going to revolve around her label. It's going to be really big."

Beside revealing about her daughter's reality TV show, Douglas also shares that she's sore about Susan Boyle's album success. She says, "It's a double-edge sword. We were happy for her (Boyle) but Ashanti held onto that record for eight years and that was a big feat to accomplish with the music industry the way it is."

"This is my personal opinion, people wanna be successful and they're gonna take whatever route that they can. At the end of the day, before Ashanti blew up in 2002, it took me nine years of struggling with three record deals that failed. It was a struggle, it was hard, but it built character."
