Ashanti, Tyrese, John Legend, R&B talents celebrate Heavy D's legacy

Even though late Hip Hop veteran Heavy D was best known for his relatable rhymes, his music reached those in R&B/soul music as well. Celebrating the life, now legacy, of Heavy D singers including Ashanti, Tyrese, John Legend and Usher paid tribute to the "Now That We Found Love" talent Wednesday.

"Many Prayers & Blessings 2 Heavy D's Family. Such a Huge impact on Music, Always Positive & all around Lovable guy! #RapLegendRIP HEV," Ashanti wrote on her Twitter page, echoing the sentiment of many who recognize Heavy D's accomplishments.

"I was just on stage with him. Now he's gone," "Open Invitation' singer Tyrese wrote Wednesday. "His last tweet 16 hours reads.. "Be inspired" @HeavyD ? I can't believe I'm writing RI-HEAVEN!"

Ashanti Will Not Be Replacing Fergie in Black Eyed Peas

After reports emerged that Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas would be leaving the group, there was talk that the band had already found someone to replace her. Rumor had it that R&B singer Ashanti would be the new addition to BEP. Truthfully, it did seem like quite the odd match up.

Some unknown source told MediaTakeOut, “The group had been looking for a replacement for some time. Ashanti was reportedly brought onto the group's world tour - as sort of an audition, to see if she could work with the band - and it worked out perfectly."However Ashanti’s reps have addressed the rumor and told Entertainment Weekly, that the news was false. So, now that the rumor has been laid to rest, I wonder if they intend on replacing Fergie or if they’ll leave the band as it is.

During an interview with band member Taboo, it appears as though Fergie’s departure is centered around wanting to focus on starting a family with her actor husband, Josh Duhamel. Taboo said in a recent interview, "We have to respect Ferg. Ferg is our sister. She definitely wants to have a family, and we're happy for her. You can't not respect people's wishes. As our sister, we have to give her space."

Though the Peas had been working on music since 1988, they only really started to gain popularity and recognition after they added Fergie to the mix and released their 2003 album Elephunk, their first international hit single being “Where is the Love?”. Since then, they have sold over 56 million records worldwide. I’m sure it must be sad for them to move on without her. It’ll be interesting to see if the group can keep up its success after the departure of their leading lady. Good luck to Fergie in starting her family.

Life may soon imitate art as the Queens bred M.C. pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon, Monday in a New York courtroom.

According to the Associated Press, the rapper, born Jeffrey Atkins, faced as many as 15 years in prison but will serve only two years as part of his plea agreement. The charges stem from an arrest on July 22, 2007 following a performance at the Beacon Theater.

Police said they found a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun in a rear door of Ja Rule’s $250,000 Maybach after it was stopped for speeding."This isn't a good day," Ja Rule said as he exited the courthouse.

Ja Rule was one of the most successful hip-hop artists of the 2000s, scoring Billboard Top 20 hits like “Between Me and You,” “Always On Time,” and “Mesmerize,” with each of his first four albums reaching platinum status.

Though he began his career as a hardcore rapper, Ja Rule became known for his R&B styled duets with female singers such as Ashanti and Jennifer Lopez.

His music may have softened, but Ja Rule did not stray far from controversy. He became involved in a very public feud with rival 50 Cent, who mocked Ja Rule’s street credibility in the 2002 song, “Wanksta.”

Ja Rule has had previous contacts with the law. He pleaded guilty to assault for punching a man at a Toronto nightclub in 2004, for which he was fined $1,200.

He becomes the latest addition to a list of rappers who have gotten into trouble over guns. T.I. returned to prison in November after a drug arrest violated the terms of his parole. T.I. served a year of house detention before he spent nine months in jail and three months in a halfway house for 2007 weapons charges.

Lil Wayne, who was arrested separately on the same 2007 night as Ja Rule, was released from Rikers Island in early November after serving nine months on a gun possession charge.

While S2S Publisher Jamie Foster Brown was in Miami helping T.I. and Tiny celebrate their nuptials, she ran into Ashanti and Nelly, who appeared to have attended the wedding together.  

They even wore matching gray ensembles. And from what we saw, Ashanti and Nelly were booed up at the high-profile reception, and they were having a great time slow dancing, hugging, eating and laughing.  
Jamie also caught Angela Simmons and Bow Wow looking awfully cozy at one table together. This is the twosome’s latest public appearance, but neither of them has confirmed the relationship yet. Last time, they popped up at a fashion show together.  

But we do want to point out that the Angela and Bow Wow have been tweeting to each other a lot lately. That includes a Pastry plug from Bow Wow and a link to his blog that Angela posted today.

Singer Ashanti pulled out of a scheduled concert in South Africa over the weekend after her cousin was killed by a 17-year-old drunk driver.

Quinshae Snead was on her way to Ashanti's hotel to pick up something for the Grammy award-winning singer before her Saturday concert when the accident occurred.

According to police, the 20-year-old was a passenger in a car that was rear-ended.

Snead was flung from the car as it rolled over and thrown into the path of another car in the opposite lane.
The 17-year-old suspect was driving without a license and had stolen his mother's car, according to Johannesburg metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

The teenager was arrested for drunken driving and hospitalized.

The driver of the car Snead was in was also injured and taken to hospital.

Executives at Ashanti's record label have relented to pressure from civil rights leaders over a controversial news report on her Web site, which has been removed from the Internet.

The Web site, made to promote her new single "The Way That I Love You," greeted visitors with a news report about a fake murder spree.

The site's news report, which users can personalize by selecting a "weapon of choice" and "victim," claims to be linked to Ashanti's revenge-themed music video for the single, in which the singer plays a woman who stabs her cheating boyfriend to death.

But the report caused concern among parents and religious heads, and dozens gathered outside the Los Angeles offices of her label Universal/Motown on Tuesday to protest the site's content and demand it be taken down.

And their efforts have proved a success. The whole campaign has been pulled and visitors are being redirected to her official, non-offensive site, reports MTV.com.

A statement released by Universal/Motown bosses reads: "Following discussions with Ashanti, we have jointly decided to remove the TheWayThatILoveYou.com Web site that hosts the Gotchagram (fake report).

"Ashanti and her music have always been about self-empowerment and addressing the issues that are most meaningful to her. We stand by our artist and her creative choices."
